Northern Piedmont’s wine wunderkind explores the varied expressions of Nebbiolo.

As a teenager in northern Piedmont, when most boys were enthralled by soccer, girls and cars, Cristiano Garella developed another obsession: Italian wine. At 13, Garella bought his first wine guide, by the influential Italian writer Luigi Veronelli. A couple of years later, he spent his Christmas money on his first two bottles, one of them Barolo Brunate from Enzo Boglietti.

Bramaterra Cascina Cottignano 2010 di Colombera & Garella, mi sembrava giusto continuare a scrivere di una denominazione che meriterebbe ben maggiore notorietà. L’occasione è arrivata con questo 2011, dove c’è ancora l’abile mano di Cristiano Garella, giovane enologo che sta dimostrando grande intelligenza e sensibilità nel modo di approcciare il vino.

The Nebbiolo-based reds of Northern Piedmont remain some of the most exciting, under-the-radar wines in the world.

Barolo and Barbaresco get most of the attention in Piedmont, but the best wines of the north are equally deserving of attention. Specifically, Gattinara, Fara, Lessona, Ghemme and Carema – all tiny appellations – are capable of producing gorgeous, age-worthy reds loaded with class and personality.
